Environmental Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan has announced that a nationwide campaign against illegal plastic bags will commence on November 1. She also confirmed that the previous decision to conduct inspections in supermarkets starting October 1 will remain in effect.
During a meeting on September 18 with shop owners and plastic product traders to address the adverse effects of plastic pollution, she emphasized the government’s commitment to strictly enforce the ban on the production, storage, transport, marketing, and use of prohibited polyethylene and polypropylene shopping bags.
From October 1, all market authorities will independently eliminate illegal plastic shopping bags, she stated.
Rizwana Hasan further noted that plastic pollution poses a threat not only to the environment but also to public health. Therefore, both the government and business owners must play a role in addressing this issue. She stressed the importance of finding alternatives to plastic for environmental protection and sustainable development. Additionally, she announced that an alternative plastic fair will be held at the Department of Environment on September 29.
